Our organization believes that we are all stronger together, and therefore happily partners with other organizations, including Savannah VOICE Festival, Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Friends of Johnny Mercer, as well as beloved Savannah houses of worship, including Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, Lutheran Church of the Ascension and First Presbyterian Church. Our organization operates year-round to create and implement our educational offerings, while propelling students toward success in our major educational initiative, The Junior ATC, crafting world-class concerts featuring performers associated with the ATC, while sourcing and engaging celebrated performers of all genres to adjudicate our international, professional vocal competition. As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating these styles of music, we work with generations that already know these songs, and inspire a love of this music in newer generations, engaging audiences of all ages through educational experiences, concert experiences, and our namesake program: The American Traditions Vocal Competition. The outdoor opera will feature sets and costumes designed by Bob Crowley, as adapted for the unique venues by the HGO Technical Department, and musical direction by HGO Head of Music Staff Bradley Moore, with the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Chorus.Now in its 29th annual year, ATC is the world’s only professional vocal competition focused on the equal appreciation of all classic styles of American music. The production will be revived for the outdoor presentations by director Katrina Bachus.
This fully staged production was originally directed by Sir Nicholas Hytner and directed during HGO’s 2014–2015 season by Ian Rutherford. Thousands of singers have participated in the competition, with top placing videos from 35 states and provinces, and over 40 colleges and. Korean soprano So Young Park, a member of Los Angeles Opera’s Domingo-Stein-Colburn young artists program, sings the Queen of the Night, and HGO Studio bass Peixin Chen will sing the sage Sarastro. Congratulations to the 2022 Winners The annual Hal Leonard Vocal Competition was founded in 2011 to encourage young singers from all over United States, from children through college undergraduates. In HGO’s May presentation of the beloved opera, Korean soprano and HGO Studio artist Pureum Jo will sing the role of the kidnapped Princess Pamina, alongside HGO Studio alumnus Scott Quinn as Prince Tamino. HGO’s performances on the outdoor stages offer free admission and access for new audiences to experience the acclaimed production, which the company presented to full houses earlier this season. The Magic Flute matches a comic yet wise fairy tale with some of the most stunningly beautiful music ever written. Houston Grand Opera’s presentation of Mozart’s final masterpiece, The Magic Flute, a co-production between Komische Oper Berlin and London avant-garde theater company 1927, is one for the ages. Houston Grand Opera will present a performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.
